In Mississippi, assisted living facilities are known as Personal Care Homes – Residential Living and Personal Care Homes – Assisted Living. Both facilities operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 

Personal Care Homes – Residential Living may offer mental health services to individuals in need. Personal Care Homes – Assisted Living must offer personal care and supplemental medical services. These include medication procedures and emergency response services. 

Food, shelter, and laundry shall be provided at these facilities. In addition, assistance may include bathing, grooming, walking, dressing, feeding, and toileting. Assistance with financial management may also be offered. 

Private and shared rooms must provide at least 80 square feet of living space per occupant. A maximum of 4 residents may share a unit. It is required to have separate bathing and toilet facilities for each sex on each floor. There must be a minimum of 1 shower/bath per 12 or fewer residents of each sex. A minimum of 1 lavatory and 1 toilet per 6 or fewer residents is also required. 

A full-time operator is needed to manage each facility. There are staffing ratios in place. In addition, there must be a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse present on all shifts. A minimum of 2 staff members are to be on-site at all times. Nursing staff requirements are based on 3 hours of nursing care per resident per 24 hours. Social services must be offered to residents and family members by a licensed social worker, counselor, or marriage and family therapist. These on-site consultations must be offered at a minimum of 8 hours per month.
