Known in California as Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly, these facilities may also be referred to as assisted living facilities, retirement homes, or board and care homes. These housing arrangements are to be chosen voluntarily by the elderly person, a guardian, a conservator, or another trusted individual.
At least 75% of residents in these facilities need to be at least 60 years or older. Younger residents must have similar needs in order to be approved. All residents are required to be assessed before moving in. Social factors, mental condition, and functional capacity should all be assessed. A medical exam signed by a physician may also be required.
A maximum of 2 persons is allowed per room. No minimum square footage is enforced. It must be a comfortable size for mobility and furniture. Furnishings may be provided by the facility or by the resident. At least one toilet and sink per 6 people is needed. One bath or shower per 10 people is sufficient.
All residential care facilities for the elderly are required to have a qualified and certified administrator employed. At least 1 staff member certified in CPR must be on the premises at all times. Although there are no set staff ratios, there must be enough staff to care for the needs of the residents. There must be a specified number of awake staff on duty overnight, depending on the number of residents.
With California’s beautiful weather and attractions such as The Golden Gate Bridge, Hollywood, and Yosemite National Park, it’s no wonder why it’s the most populated state in the U.S. This Golden State has nearly 40 million residents, with an estimated 14.3% ages 65 and older.
